Pastiche & Homage Daft Punk- Class Notes

Postmodernism is a contradiction- "nothing is real.."

Daft Punk form bricolage of ideas:

  • The ability to transform something old into something new
  • High example of postmodernism- very time consuming
  • Richly textured music- based on disco
  • As they released each single the narrative continues- based on Albator 84
  • Can be really well made- clever & intelligent
In 2001 Daft Punk released 'Discovery', the album relied heavily on sampling and saw a move towards disco inspired house music. The album was to do with their childhood and memories. 'It's less of a tribute to the music from 1975-1985.'

"This album takes a playful, fun and colourful look at music, it's about the ideas of looking at something with an open mind and not asking too many questions."

Postmodern Elements Of Inception- Class Notes

Contextual References:

  • Starts and finishes with the same scene
  • The code for the safe is presented throughout the film on room numbers, etc.
  • The paradox of whether or not they are sleeping or are awake
  • 6 different narratives- all of which interconnect (usual films contain 1 narrative)
  • Allows to mix up genres in order to create a new one within the narrative
Time is not linear- everything has already happened... Depthlessness

Introduction To Post- Modernism

Every single media text is fake, it is a recreation and a simulation of 'something'. We let ourselves be tricked provided media texts don't break our trust by not following certain things.

Postmodern texts like you to ignore the rules and let you know that they are fake. They want you to be aware that you're watching an advert and that you are being sold something. They can either do this by letting you know you're watching an advert they can make you recognise the bits from other texts. they can make a text from 'ingredients' which have nothing to do with what they are selling.

Some people make adverts which make a joke of the fact that it is all fake and make it really clear that all they want us to do is buy their thing that we don't really need.
